Apprentice Harry learns a trade with Ian Williams

A teenage college student is realising his dream of becoming a professional painter and decorator, thanks to an apprenticeship with Ian Williams.

Harry Thompson is currently working for us on a two-year apprenticeship.

The 18-year-old Cheltenham Construction College student left school at 16 determined to train as a painter and decorator.

He began working towards the technical qualifications needed to obtain a diploma in the subject, but needed sponsorship from an employer to provide on-site training and experience.

Harry joined us in August 2013 to work on a contract with Cheltenham Borough Homes. As part of his training he spends two days per week at college and three days per week working alongside our operatives, from whom he learns all aspects of internal and external painting and decorating.

Harry said: “Being able to do work in the real world gives me a perspective on what it is really like and allows me to see all the different stages of a job from start through to completion.

“Having the opportunity to do this apprenticeship has helped me gain knowledge, skills and confidence. I would like to thank my colleagues for helping me achieve this.”
