Stairway to a brighter future

As part of their ongoing training, our five carpentry apprentices in Maidstone have recently learned how to install a staircase from scratch. Over three days, the trainees learnt how to construct the landing (which included a basic introduction to floor joists), build the supporting plasterboard walls, install the staircase and under stair cupboard, and finish with a small amount of architrave and skirting.

A big thank you to Sylvan joinery for supplying the staircase to support this project. We were able to recycle and re-use materials, like the roof and studwork, from previous training sessions.

Richard Croucher, Business Manager comments: “This has not been a normal year for the apprentices in our team. Access to site and college has been limited, so we’ve been trying to set them practical tasks that give them access to build up their skillsets ready for their careers in carpentry. A massive well done to George Tzanakakis for organising this exercise that all the apprentices found hugely beneficial.”

Apprentice applications for the 2021 intake open from Monday 5th April. If you’re thinking about a career in construction, click here to find out more about the award-winning Ian Williams Academy.
